Children are engaged in a “hands-on” classroom. They are guided in the use of Montessori and other manipulative materials. “Freedom within a controlled environment”, was one of Maria Montessori’s most important tenets. Children have fun with practical life activities, sensorial material, number concepts, and reading and language development with an emphasis on phonics. Children learn the phonetic alphabet and vowels put to music, and crafts in the Art Room may involve “phonic fun”.

Children are absorbed in these age-appropriate projects as they take these concepts from the concrete to the abstract form. Thereafter, they go to their daily art program and music program. A creative corner with pots and pans, dress up clothes, building block materials and equipment for gross motor skill are available. Refreshments, story-time, and outdoor play give our nursery and pre-kindergarten children a well-rounded program.

For some children, this is the “gift of another year”–not quite ready for kindergarten’s full academic program but absorbing what is possible for them as they grow into an advanced understanding of math and reading skills. Therefore, children in this classroom have their programs individualized in accordance to their specific needs.
